Like a bolt from the blue Yahoo has bought up the social bookmarking site, Del.icio.us. Much like the Flickr acquisition back in March, Yahoo has snapped up another emerging site and technology that has redefined the way we surf. Del.icio.us is the number 1 social bookmarking site with a community thought to be around 300,000 and growing.
Personally I am a big fan of Del.icio.us but am a little apprehensive about what this could mean for the community. My faith is gradually decreasing in search engines like Google and Yahoo for finding me the well written, quality read that I want on a daily bases. The human filter of sites like Digg, Del.icio.us and Reddit, where the well written and thought provoking articles of interest float to the top, are the future of the web and this clearly hasn’t been missed by Yahoo.
What happens next is crucial – personally I think the integration of tagging and the data into Yahoo’s search is inevitable and the value of this data will be instrumental in search result ranking. My thinking is that they will keep the site available as it is (plus yahoo advertising) and keep it available to all (with a Yahoo login). This alone will cause a revolt amongst the people who value it most but the question is whether they have they learnt anything from the Flickr debacle.
