I am not sure whether there is an issue affecting all users of (the excellent) VideoLAN on Vista but it has definitely caused me problems. After installing VLC 0.8.6a on Vista the sound appeared to be fine but no picture was displayed. It seems that this is an issue with the output module in VLC but can be easily fixed by editing the settings or preferences.
- Go to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Preferences’
- Expand the ‘Video’ option and click on ‘Output Modules’
- Change the ‘Video Output Module’ from the drop down list to ‘DirectX Video Output’
- Expand ‘Output Modules’ and click on ‘DirectX’
- From the settings that appear, take the tick out of the ‘Use hardware YUV->RGB conversions’.
- Save your settings and exit.

Step 3 in the process.

Thanks for the help! This howto was very helpful. I was really disappointed when VLC didn’t work smooth in Vista, but thanks to you it is now. Thanks
No problem, glad it helped.
I followed all the directions and even for a techno phobe like me they were easy to follow however I am still not getting the DVD to play. Any suggestions? Iam working with Vista.
@Carolyn
Try changing the video output module to ‘Windows GDI Video Output’. Let me know if this helps.
Instructions were perfect – easy to follow and they worked. Thanks heaps!
