Hey techchic, I am not too sure then I am afraid. AVG may have changed something in the release of 8.5 (this post is about version 8). Alternatively a full reinstall should solve it (download the newest version, disconnect from the internet, uninstall, reboot and reinstall.)

There definitely should be one there. It would be less messing around to do this rather than uninstall. Try viewing hidden files.

First off, I have no experience of 64-bit windows vista but if you are experiencing the issue described above, "Invalid Update Control CTF File" when trying to update AVG, then the .ctf should be in that folder. The files are not hidden. Further, I do not have a "ads" folder.

My guess is that the issue is not directly linked with AVG and you have a bigger problem as you can not update any of the other programs you describe. Sorry I can not help any further, try the supplier you purchased the system from or Microsoft them selves.
