R.I.P Russell Beattie Notebook

Russell Beattie, the eminent mobile / tech blogger, has sadly hung up his blogging gloves over the weekend. Well informed and articulate, Russell has decided to call it a day and has written his last post on his notebook. He says he hasn’t necessarily gone for good and I certainly hope this to be the case.

Russell was probably the first blog that i started reading and for the last two years have enjoyed ‘hearing’ his thoughts and opinions on the cutting edge of mobile design, ui and technologies (and Yahoo!). While I am sad to see him go I really do want to say thanks for all the effort he put in making it among the first headlines I’d Rojo and even making it to my netvibes homepage (gasp!).

FireFox Flicks Contest – Just Two Days Left

The second annual FireFox Flicks contest, a promo competition for Firefox, has just two days left. The project description is, “Create a 30-second ad, in any style (live action or animated,) that brings Firefox to life for the millions of Web users who have yet to discover Firefox and the better Web experience it delivers”. Unsurprisingly, there is your fair amount of crap but at least there are some talented directors out there who havent yet burnt themsleves out from uninterupted youtube submissions! Just kidding, alongside some blatent ripoff’s, sorry homages, there is some originality on show and its certainly worth checking out.

Apple Releases Boot Camp: Xp and Linux Installs

For those who haven’t heard, Apple yesterday sensationally announced their Boot Camp software, allowing you to dual boot to Windows XP (Home or Pro). The software is available in beta form at the moment though it is scheduled for an official release in the next version of the next major version of Mac OS X, Leopard.

It might be worth all you gamers from holding fire just yet though. Michael over at Binary Bonsai has got the system up and running on his Mac Mini and as suspected this clearly isn’t gonna be the Mac gaming rig of choice. Early reports on the iMac are proving to be much better and when the video drivers are optimised results are likely to be much improved.

Firefox Extension: Session Saver

One of my only gripes with the indispensable tabbed browsing in Firefox is the lack of a save feature. I get quite into my browsing sessions, having up to 8 or 10 tabs open at one time and being forced to close because Firefox crashed or for any other reason can be a real inconvenience. While this saving your browsing session has been available in Opera for some time, it still looks as though it will be a while for an official release to incorporate this feature.

How To: Fit a Zalman VF900-Cu VGA Cooler to Your Graphics Card

Ok, a quick and dirty ‘how to’, to replace the stock heat sink / fan on a standard Connect 3D ATI Radeon X800 with Zalman’s premier GPU cooler, the CF900-Cu (see the review here). This Zalman VGA cooler has got to be the overclockers cooler of choice for your GPU and must be considered the next best thing to water cooling. Dropping the temperature significantly over the stock coolers and the majority of its competitors products, its also seriously quiet and comes complete with a basic fan control.
