5 Golden Rules of BitTorrent

BitTorrent is the best distribution protocol available at the moment and deserves the positive credit it receives. Many distributions of Linux are available using BitTorrent along with other open source software and media such as video and podcasts. Valve the video game producer also hired Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent to help distribute patches and content for games. Many other companies are using the the system legitimately for distribution of their content in one form or another. Unfortunately due to its success it is perhaps now the number 1 protocol for illegal file sharing, and rightly or wrongly also receives a fair share of bad press.

How To: Replace the Joystick Unit on your PSP

The need to replace my joystick came about after a heavy gaming session over Christmas mostly by my brother Oli. After a marathon Virtua Tennis session the PSP was passed to me and after about my first serve the joystick finally gave in and I was left with a pretty unusable PSP. As I had imported it 9 months earlier from Japan I didn’t fancy sending it all the way back to be repaired and thought I could have a go at repairing it.

Songbird Update and Screencast

I completely missed this one but for those of you that also don’t know, Songbird have released a minor update to their quality Firefox based music player (available here). This would appear to be a much more stable version and they have eliminated the problem with the player continuing to play after right clicking and closing from the taskbar. Updates include;

  • Prefs page from mozilla with browser settings
  • Some UI fixes
  • M4A playback (oops)
  • Faster metadata scanning
  • More file types (flac/wav)
  • Slurping through <embed>

CoComment Greasemonkey Script

I have blogged briefly about Cocomment before, the excellent comment and conversation tracking service. As a way to track those blog conversations that develop from time to time this genius and if you haven’t signed up you should. With more and more blogging solutions being integrated into this service (now including Flickr and Digg), it has and will continue to become for many, an essential tool. With the majority of comments coming from bloggers is it not already now a major disadvantage for you blog not to be compatible?

Microsoft Project Origami

Microsoft today officially announced Project Origami; the Ultra Mobile PC’s that will be running a version of Tablet XP.

Built to go everywhere, do everything. With powerful processors, big, bright displays, easy input options, and support for the latest connectivity standards, Ultra-Mobile PCs are ready for your life on the go.

While not initially impressed with Microsoft’s latest attempt to push XP Tablet PC Edition on us all again, after seeing the Engadget photo’s I am warming to the idea. It looks very slick, like a system with quite some potential and if rumours are to be believed it seems as though Microsoft may have beaten Apple to the punch with this one.
