Macworld and Microsoft – Here’s to 2006!

2006 is gonna be a lot of fun. With the scheduled release of Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s Revolution towards the back end of next year they are gonna join an already crowded market vying for the space in you living room. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 launched in November and is undoubtedly the hot Christmas present this year thanks to a combination of a technically impressive games console, lack of direct competition and massive shortage of units. This machine has undoubted gaming potential but Microsoft’s attempt at offering a device that keeps everyone happy was never gonna happen. Short of ideas as an innovative media centre or even as a central hub for all your AV devices there still leaves a big gap in a potentially very lucrative market.

The 10 Best Tech Podcasts of 2005

Podcasting, a format to publish rich media like audio and ultimately video by use of RSS, has come of age in 2005 with an estimated world wide audience of 4.8m people compared with just 800k in 2004. As main stream media giants begin to see the benefits of this emerging technology and bandwidth becomes more readily available (broadband internet access has overtaken dial up in the UK for the first time this year), using RSS perhaps combined with bit torrent will become the formats to publish video. For now I am enjoying this, not so amateur, radio that is easily downloaded directly to my PC and walkman.

Del.icio.us Up and Running Again – Time to Backup

Whoot, Del.icio.us is up and running again! After Del.icio.us has been down, on and off, for the last week I was delighted to find this morning it up and running again. With the initial power outages that disrupted their datacenter and the resulting problems that snowballed around them, I am very relieved to find what appears to be no loss of data, certainly to my account anyway. It has made me realise how much I appreciate this valuable service though and how much I rely on it.

How to: Wordpress Ajax Contact Page

Well after trying to get various Ajax contact pages working that I was happy with I actually settled on the easiest option, a Wordpress plugin! Why I didn’t check this out to begin with I don’t really know.

Anyway the Plugin is called Intouch it’s very easy to set up and completely configurable. With instant submission using AJAX, this is a quick and clean way to get a much needed contact page into your Wordpress blog.

  1. Simply extract the files to your ‘wp-admin\plugins’ folder and upload.
  2. Activate the plugin in the normal way from the ‘Plugins’ menu of your Wordpress Dashboard.

Deskloops is a product that has been in development a while and has always looked like an innovative way to work. Available only as public beta at the moment it redefines the way you navigate multiple programs in Windows to suit you. The product description does its job pretty well,

"Imagine yourself at the centre of a virtual loop where all the windows you use are spread out around you. Whichever window you need to view can be centred in front of you with a click of a button.
